Hey Lykkers! Ever had one of those cravings where only something crispy, juicy, and a little spicy can hit the spot? That's when spicy fried chicken becomes the hero of the day.
Whether we're making it for a family dinner, a friends' gathering, or just to treat ourselves after a long day, this dish always delivers satisfaction.
Today, we're diving into how to make crispy, flavorful, and spicy fried chicken at home — no fuss, no fancy gear, just real comfort food that hits all the right notes.
Ingredients We'll Need
Here's everything we'll need to get started. Most of these are probably already in our kitchen:
• 500g chicken wings or drumsticks
• 1 egg
• 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 2 tablespoons corn starch (for extra crispiness)
• 1 tablespoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Cooking oil (enough for frying)
Optional marinade (for better flavor):
• 1 tablespoon soy sauce
• 1 tablespoon rice drinks or lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon chili flakes
• 1 clove garlic (minced)
Step 1: Marinate the Chicken
Let's start with the marinade. While this step is optional, we recommend doing it for the best taste. Add soy sauce, lemon juice, garlic, and chili flakes to the chicken, then let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or overnight in the fridge if we have time). This will help lock in flavor and make the chicken extra juicy.
Step 2: Prepare the Coating
In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. This will be our dry coating.
In another bowl, beat the egg. We'll dip the chicken in the egg first, then coat it in the flour mixture.
Tip: For a crunchier coating, we can double-dip! That means egg → flour → egg → flour again. It's messier but worth it.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
Pour cooking oil into a deep pan or wok — about 4–5 cm deep is good. Heat it over medium-high heat until a small piece of flour bubbles and floats up when dropped in. That means the oil is ready.
Be careful here, Lykkers. Hot oil can splash, so don't overcrowd the pan. Fry 2–3 pieces of chicken at a time.
Step 4: Fry to Golden Perfection
Carefully place the chicken into the oil. Fry each piece for 8–10 minutes, depending on the size, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy on all sides.
Once done, place the fried chicken on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up extra oil. Let it rest for a couple of minutes — it'll crisp up even more!
Step 5: Add Extra Spice (Optional)
Want even more heat? We can mix a pinch of chili powder with a little salt and sprinkle it over the fried chicken while it's still warm. Some people also like brushing on a mix of melted butter and hot sauce for that extra kick.
Best Ways to Serve It
This spicy fried chicken pairs great with so many sides. Here are some ideas:
• Steamed white rice or garlic fried rice
• A simple cabbage or cucumber salad to cool the heat
• Fries or mashed potatoes
• Pickled radish or kimchi for some tang
And don't forget a drink — maybe iced tea or a fizzy soda to balance out the spice!
Storage and Reheating Tips
If we have leftovers (which is rare!), let the chicken cool fully and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat it in an oven or air fryer at 180°C for 10–12 minutes to bring back that crispy texture. Avoid microwaving — it makes the coating soggy.
Let's Get Cooking!
There's something super satisfying about making spicy fried chicken ourselves — it's fun, it smells amazing, and the result is mouthwatering. Plus, we get to adjust the level of spice just the way we like it.
